About Us

The Committee members

The committee of the Board includes 8 members including the Head Prefect, the Deputy Head Prefects and 5 Group Leaders. Every year, 5 Outstanding Prefects will be elected. Moreover, the 8 prefects with the top votes will be the candidates for the next year's committee.

School prefects

To become one of us, students of Form 3 or Form 4 are nominated by their subject teachers and the approval by all teachers. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an interview conducted by Committee Members of the Board. After the interview and with the approval of the principal, students will become probationary prefects. All probationary prefects are required to attend the Prefect Training Camp at the end of the school year. Probationary prefects will become official prefects after the Camp.

School Prefects are divided into 5 groups, with each group on duty on their respective duty days. They are led by their 5 respective Group Leaders and aim to maintain discpline in Wah Yan, as well as serving as a role model for Wahyanites.

History of WYHKPB

1973-74: With the categorisation of student bodies into "school organizations" and "student organizations", the School Prefects ceased to be affiliated to the Student Council.

1974-75: For the first time, the Head Prefect proposed a vote of thanks to the guest of honour at the Speech Day Ceremony. Previously, it was done by the School Captain (see Star 1967).

1984-85: The name "Prefects' Board" appears in the Star for the first time.

1986-87: Introduction of "Outstanding Prefect Award"

Roles and powers:

During the early days (late 1960s - early 1970s), School Prefects represented junior form students in the Student Council and helped them with their academic and other problems.

There was repeated statements in the Star about the lack of powers of School Prefects. However, it was written in the Star 1973 that "If any student seriously breaks the school rules, he will be sent to "detention" by prefects."

Did you know?

If you think School Prefects were mainly inward-facing and had no joint school activities then you are wrong. As early as in 1969-70, our School Prefects had friendly football matches and meals with our WYK counterparts.

Also, in December 1975, our School Prefects were invited by the Prefects of Belilios Public School (BPS) to a folk dance, which was the one and only joint school activity up to date.
